The International Touch: Bringing the Local Culture to Your Event's AudienceIf the wide reach of your company takes you to various cities throughout the U.S. or around the globe, don't neglect one of the most fascinating aspects of regional or international event management -- the local culture. Some companies simply take their entire "tent show" with them, right down to the swag-bag gifts and decorations, and it just doesn't make sense to do that. It raises shipping and transportation costs exponentially. Local vendors will always know their own people and culture better than you could, no matter how many travel books you've read. Use that knowledge! We've had great success in incorporating local materials, foods, customs and art forms into the many international events we've planned and managed over the years. We did an event in a Czech castle where we featured many traditional local foods, and it went over beautifully with the attendees. Local entertainers can make a big splash too, from Flamenco dancers in Spain to choral groups in Wales. The use of local materials and gifts not only sends a more inclusive message to your audience, but it also costs much less than importing all that material from the U.S. You may be amazed by the workmanship and enthusiasm you encounter. When we did an event in Kenya, we were offered a "local podium" --- which was carved by skilled artisans out of gorgeous local wood! You would be surprised how eager many local citizens are to help you make your event a success. Whether you're visiting Texas or Tokyo, keep in mind way to incorporate local culture you’re your event. It could make a world of difference! |
